Finished reading: Piranesi by Susanna Clarke π
Excellent. A complex narrative balanced by an easy style made this a pleasure to read.
“The most regretful people on earth are those who felt the call to creative work, who felt their own creative power restive and uprising, and gave to it neither power nor time.”
A warning from Mary Oliver.
I’ve just deleted my recurring ‘Publish weeknote’ task from Todoist. Every week it’s been slipping and it’s time to admit that frequency doesn’t work for me. I think I’ll try monthly updates for a while and see if that’s sustainable.
A well balanced Sunday
Finished reading: Parable of the Talents by Octavia E. Butler π
I wasnβt as engaged with this book as I was with the first in the series. The telling of the story felt disjointed. However Iβm pleased to have seen how Laurenβs story unfolded.
Finished reading: China Lake by Meg Gardiner π
Looking for a new (to me) crime series with a female lead. Trying out a few options by Meg Gardiner. First up Evan Delaney.
Finished reading: The Shadow District by Arnaldur Indridason π
Finished reading: Parable of the sower by Octavia E. Butler π
Outstanding. I canβt explain the comfort (not sure thatβs the right wordβ¦ hope, maybe?) this book gave me despite the world it is set in. Iβm not ready to let it go yet.
Is it possible to go into a bookshop or library and only come out with the specific thing you went in for? Asking for a friend π
Finished reading: Convenience Store Woman by Sayaka Murata π
Finished reading: Foster by Claire Keegan π
Another remarkable story. We join somewhere in the middle and leave before its end, yet Keeganβs writing always feels like just enough.
I want to read more by Stephen King. I really enjoyed The Long Walk and am wondering if the best place to start would be other novels he published under the Richard Bachman pen name. Would welcome other suggestions too please π
Paused reading: The Three Musketeers by Alexandre Dumas π
I was really struggling to get into this. Rather than push on Iβve decided itβs just not the right time and am pressing pause. Will try again later in the year.
Doing a distance challenge with work has got me out and about so much more this month. Hit 100km yesterday. I need to think about how to keep this motivation up after the challenge ends.

“What you learn in the thick of life is the limits of rationality.”
Krista Tippett in conversation with Nick Cave
Finished reading: Sea of Tranquility by Emily St. John Mandel π
Sublime. What a way to start a new year in books. Really want to reread Station Eleven now too.
Iβll watch most sports with the notable exceptions of F1, horse racing and golf. Today may be the first time Iβve actively chosen to watch darts. Have to see if Luke Littler can continue his amazing run and take home the top prize π―
This is the first year in I canβt remember how long that I havenβt heaped pressure on myself to finish lots of things (and inevitably fail) before the new year ticks round. It feels refreshing.
Finished reading: A Scatter of Light by Malinda Lo π
Last book of the year. Indulging my love of queer origin stories.
