Never seen the Tyne so high. Left work today to find parts of the path along the Quayside on the Newcastle side of the Swing Bridge blocked off by flood defences ๐ฎ
Part of building better creative habits is making sharing easier. Now that I can post here directly from Feedbin and Keep letโs see what happensโฆ
I picked up Issue 12 of Own Your Web at just the right time. This week’s focus for me is establishing a rhythm for my creative practice, whether that’s writing, sketching or printing.
Currently reading: Prophet Song by Paul Lynch ๐
Oof, this packs a punch. Only ~100 pages in but I can already see why it won the Booker.
This comma butterfly was out making a point today, hanging out on a local wildlife sign that only told us to look out for peacocks and tortoiseshells
Finished reading: Piranesi by Susanna Clarke ๐
Excellent. A complex narrative balanced by an easy style made this a pleasure to read.
“The most regretful people on earth are those who felt the call to creative work, who felt their own creative power restive and uprising, and gave to it neither power nor time.”
A warning from Mary Oliver.
I’ve just deleted my recurring ‘Publish weeknote’ task from Todoist. Every week it’s been slipping and it’s time to admit that frequency doesn’t work for me. I think I’ll try monthly updates for a while and see if that’s sustainable.
A well balanced Sunday
Finished reading: Parable of the Talents by Octavia E. Butler ๐
I wasnโt as engaged with this book as I was with the first in the series. The telling of the story felt disjointed. However Iโm pleased to have seen how Laurenโs story unfolded.
Finished reading: China Lake by Meg Gardiner ๐
Looking for a new (to me) crime series with a female lead. Trying out a few options by Meg Gardiner. First up Evan Delaney.
Finished reading: The Shadow District by Arnaldur Indridason ๐
Finished reading: Parable of the sower by Octavia E. Butler ๐
Outstanding. I canโt explain the comfort (not sure thatโs the right wordโฆ hope, maybe?) this book gave me despite the world it is set in. Iโm not ready to let it go yet.
Is it possible to go into a bookshop or library and only come out with the specific thing you went in for? Asking for a friend ๐
Finished reading: Convenience Store Woman by Sayaka Murata ๐
Finished reading: Foster by Claire Keegan ๐
Another remarkable story. We join somewhere in the middle and leave before its end, yet Keeganโs writing always feels like just enough.
I want to read more by Stephen King. I really enjoyed The Long Walk and am wondering if the best place to start would be other novels he published under the Richard Bachman pen name. Would welcome other suggestions too please ๐
Paused reading: The Three Musketeers by Alexandre Dumas ๐
I was really struggling to get into this. Rather than push on Iโve decided itโs just not the right time and am pressing pause. Will try again later in the year.
Doing a distance challenge with work has got me out and about so much more this month. Hit 100km yesterday. I need to think about how to keep this motivation up after the challenge ends.
